Tips on Buying Cars: Purchasing a demo model, demo model, service customers

Question
How much can I reasonably expect to save by purchasing a demo model from a dealer? I've been told anywhere from $1 per mile up to $10,000. The vehicle I am looking at has approximately 3,000 miles on it.

Answer
Hi Mike and thanks for the very interesting question.  There are no set answers or formulas to determine the answer.  As a GENERAL rule the discount on a demonstrator is determined by the dealer.  If the dealer is offered some special deal my the manufacturer for demos he should pass this on to you.  This, unfortunately, is not published like rebates or special financing.  As I do not what make you are considering I do not know what, if any, programs are offered to the dealer.  My best advice would be to sit down with the sales person and if you wish show them this answer; tell them you want to know what financial assistance the dealership has received and how much of that they are willing to share with you.  Also check the vehicle you are interested very carefully for both physical and mechanical problems.  If the demo was assigned to one person for the entire time talk to that person and see how the vehicle was cared for.  In many cases the vehicle may have been used as a loaner for service customers and could have been mistreated.  Be careful, get good answers and make a decision based on your findings, not a formula.  If you have more specific questions I would be glad to try to help.  Best of luck.  Bud
