Tires: Tires, goodyear wrangler silentarmor, psi max

Question
i have a 96 dodge ram 4x4 single cab, 5.2 v8, my truck came with stock tires of 245/75/r16, i just recently bout the 265/75/r16 goodyear wrangler silentarmor pro grade(larger load cap, 80 psi max, got them cheap why went with pro grade) and wondering if i should still go with the psi raiting on the door( i believe 50 cold front and 45 cold back), or if i should go with a lower psi since larger tires and higher load cap, i do limited to no hauling and mostly city driving, also since raiting is cold psi, in the summer do i lower it further? and im more worried about tire wear not mpg or performance. the load raiting on the silentarmor is 3415 lbs, not sure on tires that came with

Answer
Tim,

There are 2 schools of thought on inflation pressure when changing tire sizes.

The first says to match the load carrying capacity.  In that case, you would need to drop the pressure on the placard by 5 psi.

The second school of thought says that if you have enough load carrying capacity, you should try to match the spring rate of the original tires by using the same inflation pressure.

I can see both sides of this.  From a wear respective going with the lower pressure seems the right answer, but I also know that inflation pressure plays a minor role compared to things such as alignment, so I tend to think higher pressure would be better.

And the pressure is supposed to be dialed into the current temperature.  So as it gets colder in the winter, you'll need to add pressure to compensate for the loss due to temperature - and vice versa in the summer.
