Tires: tires, tire placard, 245 75 16 tires

Question
i have a 1999 tahoe with  245/75/16 tires on it ,can i change them to 225/75/16

Answer
Jeff,

On every vehicle sold in the US, there is a sticker – commonly called the tire placard - that lists the original tire size and the proper pressure for that size.  The placard is usually located on a doorpost or in the glove box – but sometimes it is located in the trunk or on the fuel filler door.

If the placard says that the original tires were 225/75R16, then you can change them over.  If not, no, that would reduce the load carrying capacity which increases the risk of a load related tire failure, which sometimes has tragic results.
