Tires: Goodyear Wrangler RT-S P265/70/17, goodyear wrangler rt, goodyear wrangler rt s

Question
I recently purchased a 2003 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer 4X2. It came with Goodyear Wrangler RT-S tires, size  P265/70/17 and marked "Standard Load". They all look to be worn about the same. 2 tires are marked with a 35 max psi rating and the other 2 are marked 44 max psi; the sticker on the door jamb says that they should be set at 35 psi. Why would there be 2 different max psi ratings on the same size and kind of tire? Shouldnt they all be either 35 or 44?

Answer
Steve,

Read what I said about the pressure printed on the sidewall:

Pay particular attention to "The notes on Page 1-34" - about 1/3 the way down.  It explains where the pressure on the sidewall comes from.

I suspect you may be looking at tires coming from 2 different camps:  The OE engineer's camp and the replacement engineer's camp.  The OE engineer is following the vehicle manufacturer.  But when the tire is no longer supplied as OE, the design responsibility transfers to the Replacement engineer and he makes changes to make it suitable for sale in the replacement market - and one of those changes could be the stamping.

So it is likely the tires are different.  Is this something to worry about?  Probably not.
