Tires: cupping on tires, 2002 audi a4, inch tires

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2002 Audi A4 all wheel drive and it is certified used car. When i purcased the car the allignment was off
so i brought it to the Audi dealership were i had purchased the car from and they said the allignment was off so they did an allignment on the car. Soon after i put brand new 17 inch tires on the car and 10,000 miles later the tires are cupping on both of the front tires on the insides. so i was wondering if maybe something is broke or what because 10,000 miles on a brand new set of tires and they are cupping. To me it looks like an allignment issue but i had the allignment done 10,000 miles ago does an allignment on these cars go out real easy? The tires are Falken 512.

ANSWER: Nate,

"Cupping" is generally caused by misalignment.  But it is also caused by worn out shocks.

So I would suggest you find somewhere else to get the alignment done and have them make an assessment about the shocks.

QUESTION: How would you know if the shocks were bad? The car seems to ride fine

Answer
Nate,

There are several tests to tell if they are bad:

1)  Bounce test:  Step on the bumper and then jump off.  The car should rebound once.  If it is more once, then they are bad.

2)  If they do not freely allow the suspension to travel.

3)  Any sign of leakage.

But there aren't any tests to tell if they are good.
