Used Cars: used car purchase question, implied warranty, car purchase

Question
Hi, Just bought a used care Saturday night, Sunday the dealer is closed. Drovew the car home Saturday night and the engine light came on, Sunday tried it again light flashing , car shaking and found a bubble in tire. Can not go back till Monday morning. I live in NJ, Do I have the right to return the car for my money back and back out of the deal or do I have to let them repair it. Never even had a chance to drive it for more then driving it back from the dealer. I feel I have been totally screwed. Please advise what I should do come Monday morning. Thx in advance, Sylvie Hebert

Answer
I don't know the law in NJ but in California there is a new law stating a customer has the right to return the vehicle within three days of purchase regardless of there being a warranty or not. The customer has to write a statement indicating why along with paying a restocking fee around $150 to $200 dollars. Check return policies with the NJ DMV. Try to work it out with the dealer. Maybe they would be willing to take it back. If their smart they'll try to work it out with you, and make you happy because they don't want you to be angry. You have rights as a consumer, and could get them in trouble with the DMV which is the last thing they want. When you buy from a private party it's as/is but when buying from a dealer there is an implied warranty of good faith when purchasing a vehicle.
