Trucking: best engine type, volvo trucks, volvo engine

My husband and I are looking into buying our first truck.  He's been driving for 8 yrs and I've been out there for about 14 months.  We think we have a handle on most of the business aspect of this decision, but in talking to my boss today we mentioned that we were considering purchasing a 2005 Volvo with a Volvo engine, which is within our budget and fits in the business plan.  Well, my boss nearly choked and started strongly steering us away from this truck.  My question is: is the Volvo really any better or worse than any other option we might choose?

Debi, I only have second hand knowledge but we had high maintenance costs with similar Volvo trucks until we got rid if them.  Don't know if it was driver abuse or just bad trucks.  Probably a combination of factors.  Whatever you buy have it thoroughly checked over by a qualified mechanic before you sign the contract.  Someone who works with these trucks should be able to steer you the right way.
