Trucking: Questions on tie down methods...., open car trailer, axle straps

Question
I recently purchased a 44' Imperial open car trailer with the D rings in the floor. They are approx. 41" apart (2 rows down the middle) The trailer has no means of fastening to the outside edges. What method of strapping would you recommend? I like the idea of using wheel straps, but don't know if the D rings will work since they are on the inside of the wheels. Axle straps will work on some vehicles, but I'm not sure how to fasten them on cars with independent suspensions and front wheel drive. I just want to be sure I'm doing it correctly and safely. Any pointers will be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Paul.

In your situation, a lot of guys would use lever or ratchet binders.  You'll need to use something like this to keep DOT legal.  Most guys just go around the axle.  On larger trailers, I believe wheel straps are illegal.  I would call your state's Department of Transportation.  They can tell you what is required.

Good luck!
