A vehicle's powertrain is the core of the car's energy production and distribution to key components, allowing it to move and gain momentum. It is composed of three separate units.
The engine, drive axle and transmission make up the powertrain. The engine provides the energy for movement, which in turn is transferred to the transmission. The transmission intensifies the input power and conveys it to the drive axle for torque to spin the wheels.
Different levels and specifications of powertrains exist, depending on the vehicle's purpose on the road. A basic commuting car does not need an overly strong powertrain, but a large truck may need extra power to haul heavy items.
If you're purchasing a vehicle for large loads, aside from the average weight being carried on a constant basis, consider how many miles it will be driven and on what type of surface, such as dirt or pavement, to choose the proper powertrain for the job.
