How to Replace the Sway Bar on a Ford Escape

The Ford Escape is a mid-size SUV that has a higher center of gravity than most vehicles, which causes it to sometimes sway from side to side when turning. The truck comes factory-equipped with a sway bar, but if you want to upgrade, you can swap it out for a stiffer model, which will improve the ride and minimize leaning in the corners

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Tire iron
  • Replacement sway bar
  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
  • 3/8-inch hex key set
  • Open-end wrench set
  • Lift the front of the vehicle using the jack, and secure it on jack stands. Remove the front wheels using the tire iron and place them to the side, out of the workspace.

  • Locate the sway bar, a 1-inch diameter pipe that runs between two tires and connects the lower control arms to each other via sway bar end links. Unbolt the sway bar end links from the sway bar using the 3/8-inch ratchet, a 3/8-inch hex key and an open-end wrench.

  • Unbolt the sway bar brackets from the frame using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Pull it away from the vehicle as you do so.

  • Slide the sway bar brackets off of the stock sway bar and onto the replacement model. Then hold the sway bar in position with one hand and use the other to screw on the brackets' bolts until the bar is suspended loosely.

  • Reconnect the sway bar end links to the sway bar using the 3/8-inch ratchet, a 3/8-inch hex key and an open-end wrench.

  • Reinstall the tires using the tire iron, then raise the vehicle off of the jack stands using the jack and place lower it to the ground.

  • Tighten the sway bar bracket bolts using a 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.
