Changing the starter on a 2002 Chevy Silverado will vary depending the engine. The large engine compartment makes starter replacement relatively easy, but there are still some components you may need to remove for access.
Disconnect the truck's negative battery cable.
Raise the truck's front end and support it on jack stands. If applicable, unscrew and remove the splash shield with a screwdriver or Torx-head driver.
Unbolt and remove the starter solenoid shield and the transmission belhousing cover's bolt with a wrench if the truck has a V-8 engine Disconnect the electrical connector for the oil level sensor.
Remove the starter's mounting bolts with a wrench; on a V-8 engine, move the starter forward until it clears the bellhousing cover.
Lower the starter motor carefully and disconnect the wires from the starter solenoid with a wrench.
Connect the wires to the correct terminals on the starter motor, tightening the nuts with the wrench. Install the starter motor in place and apply its mounting bolts.
Connect the transmission belhousing cover with its bolt, the oil level sensor's electrical connector and the starter solenoid shield.
Install the splash shield with its screws if needed, then lower the truck off the jack stands.
Reconnect the battery cable.
