How to Install a Brake Switch on My 2005 Nissan Sentra

The Nissan Sentra, introduced in 1982, was a strong contender in the compact car market at the time, boasting impressive efficiency, low emissions and a respectable safety rating. But by the time the fifth generation came, the once lean and anemic Sentra of Nissan’s past became a little heavier, meaner and sexier. While replacing a faulty brake light switch isn’t considered a routine maintenance task, it’s a repair that most people can take care of themselves – without an expensive trip to the shop.

Things You'll Need

  • Flashlight
  • Nissan part No. 25320-AX00C or equivalent brake light switch
  • Slide the driver’s seat to the rearmost position to create enough working room. With the aid of flashlight, inspect the upper area of the brake pedal assembly, locate the brake switch, and disconnect the wiring connector from the rear of the switch.

  • Grasp the body of the switch and turn it counterclockwise to release it from its bracket. Pull the switch from the rear of the bracket. Compare the replacement switch with the old one to ensure compatibility.

  • While pulling up and holding the brake pedal, insert the replacement switch into the rear of the bracket. Adjust the position of the brake light switch until the plunger is pressed in against the tab of the brake pedal arm, then rotate the switch clockwise to lock it in position. Connect the wiring connector to the switch, then check the brake lights for operation.
