The Location of an Evaporator Canister in a 2010 Ford Escape

Since it was introduced in 2001, the Ford Escape has been a popular mid-sized SUV. You could purchase the 2010 Escape with two- or all-wheel drive, with a four- or six-cylinder engine, or as a Hybrid. No matter which one you have, there are components of the emissions control system that can fail.

Things You'll Need

  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Ratchet w/extensions
  • Metric sockets
  • Safety glasses
  • Park the Escape on a flat, hard surface. Remove the keys from the ignition. Place your wheel chocks around the front tires. Jack up the rear of the vehicle by placing the jack under the center of the rear subframe, directly between the rear tires. Place the jack stands under the body pinch welds near the rear tires. Put on your safety glasses.

  • Lay under the rear of the vehicle. Locate the evaporative emissions canister in front of the fuel tank. It looks like a large, black, plastic box. Remove the electrical connector from the box by pressing the locking tab and pulling on the connector. Remove the hose from the canister by simply pulling it and turning it at the same time. Remove the evaporative line from the canister by pressing on both of the connector tabs with your fingers and pulling it from the canister. Remove the four canister bolts with the appropriate socket and ratchet. Remove the canister from the vehicle.

  • Install the new canister and start the mounting bolts by hand. Tighten the bolts and torque them to 62 inch-pounds with the torque wrench. Install the evaporative emissions line to the canister by pressing it onto the canister fitting until you feel it snap into place. Install the hose onto the canister by pressing it fully into place. Install the electrical connector to the canister by pressing it into place until you feel it snap on. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
