How to Install Coilover Sleeves

Coilover sleeves are one of the options when deciding whether to lower or raise the height of your vehicle. These come with a set of threaded sleeves equipped with coil springs. Coilover sleeves allow you to adjust the height of the springs after you install them. Once the coilover sleeves are installed, they become part of the shock assembly of your vehicle. It is helpful to have knowledge of vehicle mechanics to complete this project, which should take about two hours.

Things You'll Need

  • Vehicle jack
  • Jack stand
  • Spring compressors
  • Ratchet and socket set
  • Coilover sleeve kit
  • Open-end wrench
  • Park the vehicle on an even surface. Raise the vehicle with a jack to make it easier to work. Place jack stands on all four corners of the chassis to support it prior to beginning any work.

  • Determine what you want the vehicle's height to be. A good rule of thumb to remember is that most vehicles can be lowered or raised no more than 1 1/2 inches. You do not want to lower the vehicle's height too much or it could bottom out.

  • Slide one spring compressor on each side of the coil spring located on the vehicle's shock. Tighten the spring compressors with the ratchet and socket set. The coil spring should be compressed about 3 inches with the compressor. Make sure that you tighten each spring compressor the same amount.

  • Push the threaded coilover sleeve onto the shock. Slide a coilover sleeve collar onto the shock sleeve. This will secure the coilover sleeve and you will use it to adjust the height.

  • Push a coilover spring cap onto the end of the rod on the shock. Rotate the coilover collar with an open-ended wrench to adjust the spring height, as necessary. Once you are satisfied with the height, you are finished.
