How to Install the Boyesen Power Reeds

The Boyesen dual stage reed kit comprises a carburetor kit for many two-cycle applications, which include outboard motors, ATVs, snowmobiles and other small engines. The kit's design offers an easy installation process with minimal tools. The reeds, which monitor fuel ratio and volume, increase fuel combustion as well as enhance overall performance by the use of two-layered reeds that function as low-end and high-end reeds. A typical small engine owner can install the Boyesen reed kit in a minimal amount of time with average mechanical skills.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdrivers
  • Socket set
  • Ratchet wrench
  • Rags
  • Torque wrench
  • Remove the small screws or bolts that hold the air box bracket in place on your engine, with a screwdriver or socket. Use a screwdriver or socket to remove the screws or bolts on the air box clamp. Remove the screws or bolts on the intake manifold clamp. Pull the carburetor back and out of the intake manifold. Push the carburetor forward to disengage it from the air box. Set the carburetor to one side.

  • Loosen and remove the intake manifold mounting bolts with a socket. Pull out the small box-like reed valve assembly, called the "reed block." Use a screwdriver to remove the reed mounting screws, the reed stops and the reeds. Examine the reed block's surface for any deep scratches or deformities. Wipe it clean with a dry rag.

  • Place the new reeds on the reed block, using the kit rev-plate; check the Boyesen instructions manual for its identification and placement. Install the thick bottom reed on the block first. Lay the reed with the rounded windows over the bottom reed. Place the reed flap over the rounded window reed, then lay the reed stop last. Place the reed screws in by hand.

  • Check to make sure you have centered the reeds on the reed block. If the reeds refuse to lay flat, flip them over and align them. Carefully tighten the reed block screws with a torque wrench to 7-foot-pounds of torque. Do not over-tighten them — you will crush the material.

  • Place the reed box assembly back onto the manifold. Reinsert the intake manifold and tighten the clamp bolts with a screwdriver or socket. Install the carburetor on the intake manifold and place the air box onto it. Insert the air box screws or bolts by hand, then tighten them with a screwdriver of socket.
