How to Change a Mazda 3 Horn

The horn in your Mazda 3 is an important device which helps indicate your location to other drivers. If it becomes damaged or stops working altogether, it can put you in harm's way and at risk of an accident because you will be unable to indicate your location to another driver. To avoid this dangerous scenario you should replace your defective horn with a new one as soon as you notice it may have become damaged. You can complete the work in around half an hour.

Things You'll Need

  • Ratchet wrench and socket set
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Horn
  • Open the hood of your Mazda 3. Loosen the bolt on the negative terminal clamp using a socket wrench and pull the negative cable away from the terminal.

  • Sit in the driver seat of the vehicle. Carefully unhook the connectors around the edge of the steering wheel that hold the steering wheel cover in place. Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry the cover from the wheel. Place the cover to one side.

  • Lift the horn switch slightly out of the steering wheel. Use your fingers to follow the wiring for the horn until you locate the electrical connector that the wiring is attached to in the center of the wheel. Pull the wiring away from the connector and remove the horn switch completely from the wheel.

  • Place the new horn switch in to the steering wheel. Attach the wiring to the electrical connector in the center of the wheel. Place the steering wheel cover back over the wheel and secure it in place by reattaching its connectors.

  • Connect the negative cable to the battery terminal. Place the clamp around the cable and tighten the bolt with a socket wrench to secure in place. Press the horn on your steering wheel to check that it now works correctly.
