My KIA Spectra Power Locks Won't Work

Your KIA Spectra uses a power-lock system to lock the doors. If the power locks on your Spectra stop working, there are several things you can do to fix the problem. If all of your power locks quit working, the problem is with your fuse or with your key battery. However, if only one specific lock does not respond, you will have to change that specific lock switch inside your door. The entire process should not take more than an hour.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Replacement battery
  • Replacement fuse
  • Replacement door lock switch
  • Use your screwdriver to remove the tiny screw that holds your Spectra's key fob together. Remove the battery, place a new one in and then close the key and replace the screw. Test this out to see if the locks now work. The battery size will differ with vehicle years. Consult your owner's manual to make sure you buy the right size battery. If this doesn't fix the problem move on to the next step.

  • Locate your interior fuse panel and pull the lid down. The fuse panel will be located on the lower dash to the right of your steering wheel. The door-lock fuse may vary with different year vehicles, though, so consult your owner's manual or the fuse diagram on the inside of the fuse box cover. Pull your Spectra's old fuse and replace it with a new one and tighten test the lock. If this step does not work move on to the next step.

  • Pop your Spectra's hood and remove the negative battery cable with the socket set.

  • Remove the two screws on your armrest with a Phillips screwdriver.

  • Pull the armrest panel up and unplug the wiring harness plugged into the door lock switch. Pull the old door lock switch out and replace it with the new one, making sure to plug the wiring harness into the new switch.

  • Place the armrest back down into its original position by hand and then re-insert the two retaining screws and screw them in tight with the screwdriver.

  • Replace your Spectra's negative battery cable.
