1994 Camaro Transmission Removal Instructions

Removing the transmission on a 1994 Camaro, whether it is linked to a V6 or V8 engine is necessary under several circumstances. Flywheels, clutches, and torque converter repairs all necessitate removal of the transmission and bell housing from the engine. Some repairs to the vehicle's transmission itself simply must be accomplished with the transmission removed from the car, such as broken or worn gears and other internal problems. Removing the transmission can be a difficult task. Have an owners' manual handy.

Things You'll Need

  • Automotive jack
  • Jack stands
  • Transmission jack
  • 3/8 inch socket set with extensions
  • Camaro vehicle repair manual
  • Jack up the Camaro and support it on jack stands. The car will have to be at least 1-1/2 feet to two feet off the ground to clear the transmission.

  • Remove the car's shifter knob, then remove the center console face plate or in the case of manual transmission cars, the shift boot. Disconnect the shift linkage near the shifter so that the shaft will slide through the floor of the car unobstructed.

  • Drain the transmission by removing the transmission pan using the socket set.

  • Position the transmission jack under the transmission of the car and jack up the platform until it gently supports the bottom of the transmission.

  • Unbolt the transmission bell housing from the engine of the car. There will be several bolts on the top and on the bottom of the bell housing which mates to the surface of the engine.

  • Pull the transmission back as far as it will go, then slowly lower the jack. Disconnect the transmission's sensors from the computer harness before attempting to pull the transmission out from under the car.
