How to Rebuild a Ford F150 Steering Column

The Ford F-150's steering column is the column on the left-side of the dashboard that contains the wiper switch, the combination switch, and supports the steering wheel. If you take the steering column apart to repair or replace one of those components, you will need to rebuild it. Rebuilding a Ford F-150's steering column is actually fairly simple, but you need to make sure to disconnect the battery beforehand so as to not accidentally set off the vehicle's airbags.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Wrench
  • Philips screwdriver
  • Open the truck's hood. Unplug the negative-cable from the battery with a socket wrench.

  • Reattach the main steering column shaft to the dashboard by reinstalling its two securing bolts with a socket wrench.

  • Snap the upper and lower steering column covers onto the steering column, making sure they click into place.

  • Reinstall the screws to both the upper and lower steering column covers. There are two screws for each cover.

  • Use a wrench to reattach and tighten the tilt wheel lever by connecting its clamp to the steering column.

  • Press in the pin on the key lock cylinder and push it into the steering column. Twist the cylinder to engage its locking pin and secure it to the F-150.

  • Reattach the center trim panel by reinstalling its two upper corner bolts.

  • Reconnect the battery and close the F-150's hood.
