How to Bolster Seats

If you have a sporty car or often find yourself sliding around on your car seat through turns, it may be prudent to add bolsters to the sides of the seat. Bolsters are additional material added to the seat, under the upholstery, that can provide additional grip over factory seats. They're especially useful with seats that are upholstered in leather, which can be a particularly slippery material.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Set of sockets
  • Set of Allen wrenches
  • Pliers
  • Scissors
  • Seat foam
  • Duct tape
  • Remove the seats you want to bolster from your car and disconnect any airbag sensors or electronic components that may be attached to the seat.

  • Flip the seat upside down, so that the upholstery's seams under the the seat are exposed.

  • Remove any metal clips that are securing the upholstery to the seat frame, using your pliers.

  • Pull off the upholstery, once you've loosened it, to expose the seat's foam cushioning.

  • Cut the pieces of additional seat foam that you purchased to the form that you desire, whether it's a mild bolster or a more extreme, longer bolster. You'll need pairs of pieces, creating one for each side of the seat you're working on.

  • Position the bolster pieces over the existing seat foam and secure them to the seat with duct tape.

  • Drape the upholstery back over your seat and re-install its securing clips. Start at one corner of the seat and slowly work your way around the rest of the seat, until it is taught against the seat foam.

  • Reinstall the seat in your car.
