How to Change the Fuel Relay on a 1998 Acura RL 3.5

The fuel pump relay on a 1998 Acura RL 3.5 is located inside the fuse/relay box in the engine compartment. This relay is controlled by the powertrain control module, or PCM. When the PCM decides to turn on the fuel pump, it actuates the relay in order to supply the fuel pump with the proper amount of power. A faulty fuel pump relay can cause the engine to stall or prevent it from starting. Replacement fuel pump relays are available from auto parts stores and Acura or Honda dealerships.

Things You'll Need

  • Replacement fuel pump relay
  • Place the Acura's transmission shift lever into the "P" position, turn off the engine, and engage the emergency brake.

  • Locate the under-hood relay control box. It is a small plastic box between the battery and the brake fluid reservoir.

  • Take the lid off of the relay control box. Read the diagram on the opposite site of the cover. This diagram shows the location of the fuel pump relay inside the relay box.

  • Find the relay inside the relay control box and remove it. Install the new relay in the relay control box.

  • Reinstall the cover on the relay control box and start the engine in order to verify that the fuel pump relay operates properly.
