How to Change the Transmission Oil in a 2005 Chevy Malibu

Chevrolet recommends that the transmission fluid for a 2005 Malibu be changed at 100,000 miles for maximum performance. Proper transmission maintenance allows smooth shifting between gears, protects internal parts and prevents overheating. Unlike the previous Chevy Malibu models, Malibus made from 2005 to 2009 have a sealed transmission tank. These sealed systems do not have a dipstick to check the transmission fluid. To check or change the transmission fluid, you must go underneath the vehicle.

Things You'll Need

  • Oil pan
  • Protective glasses
  • Gloves
  • 7 quarts of Dexron III automatic transmission fluid
  • Rubber mallet
  • Funnel
  • Gasket
  • Transmission filter
  • 10 millimeter and 1/2" socket and ratchet
  • Long flat-head screwdriver
  • Jack
  • 2 jack stands
  • 2 bricks
  • Disposable rag
  • Raise the front end of your Malibu with a jack using the jack markers located on either side of the vehicle. Set the emergency brake.

  • Secure your vehicle with the jack stands on each side. For additional security, add a brick behind each rear tire. Wear your protective glasses and gloves.

  • Locate the transmission. Look for a small plug with a hex bolt on the passenger side of the transmission, adjacent to the passenger side front tire. Place the oil pan under the transmission to catch the fluid.

  • Unscrew the hex bolt using the 10 millimeter and 1/2" socket and ratchet. Use the rubber mallet to gently tap on the pan to drain the fluid.

  • Remove the remaining bolts and lower the pan.

  • Use the flat-head screwdriver to remove the gasket.

  • Remove the transmission filter. Wipe any excess fluid with the disposable rag.

  • Install the new filter and gasket. Re-install the pan by tightening the hex bolt and the securing bolts.

  • Lower the vehicle. Locate the red transmission cap under the hood.

  • Insert the funnel and add the 7 quarts of transmission fluid up to the full marker. Do not overfill.

  • Start the vehicle and let it run for 5 to 10 seconds.

  • Gently switch gears. There should be a smooth transition from one gear to another. Place your Malibu in park. Activate the emergency brake and check the floor for any leaks.
