Location of the Oil Pressure Switch for 1997 Toyota Camry

The oil pressure switch in a 1997 Camry is used to detect oil pressure loss and warn the driver if the pressure drops to an unsafe condition. The switch, unlike a transducer that provides early warning of oil pressure failure, does not show oil pressure that is slowly dropping. Instead, a dashboard warning light comes on only when the low pressure condition is present. This means, without the early-warning feature, that it is important to routinely check the engine oil level and periodically inspect the oil pressure switch for leaks.

  • Raise the hood of the Toyota Camry and locate the alternator at the front of the engine. The alternator is located on the left-front of the engine. Look directly down, and it is the first item that is nearest the front of the car that is driven by a belt. It is round, made of aluminum and has a heavy wire that goes directly to the battery attached to it's back housing.

  • Look to the left side of the alternator, both behind and to the rear, on the front of the engine. Located there is a small, round switch with a tapered end that is screwed into the engine block. Covering the switch is a black, protective cover with one wire attached to it. This is the oil pressure switch.

  • Unplug the plastic cover and inspect the switch for leaks around the body. Replace the switch if there is any indication of leakage.
