How to Fix a 2002 Honda Accord's Brake Light

The brake lights on the 2002 Honda Accord are one of the three lights on the tail lamp assembly. If the brake light begins to malfunction, there are two possible reasons. The bulb of the brake light may be burnt out and should be replaced or the tail lamp fuse is blown out and should be replaced. If only the brake light bulb is malfunctioning, it most likely indicates a problem with the bulb. If all three tail lights are malfunctioning, then there is most likely a problem with the fuse.

Things You'll Need

  • Replacement 7443 bulb
  • Replacement 20A fuse
  • Turn the Accord's engine off and open the hood. Locate the fuse block on the driver's side of the engine compartment, just behind the battery.

  • Remove the cover from the fuse block and locate the fuse in slot "13" labeled "HORN/STOP." This is the tail lamp fuse. If the fuse is blown out, it should be replaced.

  • Pull the fuse out of the fuse block and install a 20A fuse in its place. Reattach the cover to the fuse block and close the hood.

  • Open the trunk and remove the carpet if your vehicle is equipped with one. Remove the tail light cover on the inboard side of the vehicle.

  • Rotate the bottom socket on the tail lamp assembly counterclockwise to remove it.

  • Pull the bulb out and install a 7443-type bulb in its place. Make sure to touch only the plastic base of the bulb. If you accidentally touch the glass portion of the bulb, wipe it down with a clean rag before installation.

  • Reattach the socket to the assembly and reattach the tail light cover. Place the carpet back in the vehicle and close the hood.
