How to Pull a Jeep Cherokee Motor

Eventually an engine needs a little refreshing or a complete overhaul. High mileage, a rod knocking or excessive oil usage or new pistons are a few samples of why the engine would be pulled. It is also possible that the engine is locked up and the vehicle requires a new one. Regardless of the reason, knowing what is involved when pulling an engine is just the beginning. Delving into the actual removal is whole other experience.

Jeep Cherokee fuel pressure relief.

  • Relieve the fuel pressure by removing the fuel cap. Replace the fuel cap.

  • Remove the cap from the fuel pressure test port. The test port is on the fuel rail on the right side of the engine.

  • Place rags under and around the test port for fuel absorption. Push the valve in on the test port with a small screwdriver. Replace the cap.

Jeep Cherokee hood and air housing assembly removal.

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  • Use an old blanket or bedspread to cover the fenders and cowl.

  • Detach wiring harnesses from the hood. Use a socket and ratchet to remove the hinge-to-hood nuts. Have a helper support the hood. Remove the hood.

  • Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the clamp on the air duct. Unlatch the clips on the air filter housing. Use a socket and ratchet to remove the air filter housing nuts from the inner fender well.

  • Lift up the housing. Detach the fresh air intake duct. Remove the air housing assembly.

Jeep Cherokee coolant system draining.

  • Place a container under the radiator drain plug. Use a pair of pliers to turn the radiator drain counterclockwise. Remove the drain plug out. Unscrew the radiator cap. Allow the coolant to drain.

  • Reinstall the radiator drain plug. Use pliers to tighten the plug.

  • Place the container under the drain plug on the engine. Use pliers to turn the drain plug counterclockwise. Remove the drain plug. Let the coolant drain. Install the drain plug.

Jeep Cherokee engine removal.

  • Label both ends of the vacuum lines, emissions system hoses, wiring connectors, ground strap and fuel lines with a marker and masking tape. Start with No. 1 to ensure proper installation. Disconnect the wires and hoses.

  • Label the coolant hoses with a marker and masking tape. Detach the hoses from the engine.

  • Use a wrench to loosen the power steering pump bolts. Use a socket and ratchet to turn the tensioner adjusting bolt counterclockwise. Remove the belt.

  • Use a socket and ratchet to remove the nuts from the fan. Pull the fan/clutch assembly off the studs. Place the fan/clutch assembly in the shroud. Use a socket and ratchet to remove the fan shroud bolts.

  • Lift the shroud until the slots on the bottom bracket are cleared. Remove the assembly from the vehicle.

  • Use a fuel line spring-lock tool to disconnect the fuel lines that run from the engine to the chassis. Detach the first two cables, on the left side of the throttle body, by pulling them back and to the left. Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry the accelerator cable away from the metal stud. Use a socket and ratchet to remove the three bolts. Remove the control cable bracket.

  • Use a socket and ratchet to remove the power steering pump bolts. Keep the pump in an upright position to the engine compartment. Tie a rope or wire to the pump to hold it out of the way.

  • Unbolt the air compressor with a socket and ratchet. Set the compressor to the side. Leave the lines attached.

  • Place a container under the drain plug on the oil pan. Remove the plug with a socket and ratchet. Let the oil drain. Unbolt the oil pan from the engine. Remove the pan. Remove the oil filter with a filter wrench.

  • Remove the alternator mounting nuts/bolts with a socket and ratchet. Remove the alternator. Remove the starter mounting bolts with a socket and ratchet. Remove the starter.

  • Lift the front of the Jeep with a floor jack. Place jack stands under the frame on each side. Lower the jack until the Jeep rests on the jack stands.

  • Unbolt the exhaust system from the engine. Remove the torque convertor-to-drive plate fasteners. Unclip the transmission fluid lines from any studs on the engine oil pan.

  • Support the transmission with a jack. Position a block of wood between the jack and transmission to prevent damage to the transmission.

  • Attach lifting chains to the lifting brackets on the engine. Roll the engine hoist into position. Connect the chains to the hoist. Take up the slack in the chain.

  • Remove the transmission-to-engine block bolts with a socket and ratchet. Remove the engine mount to frame bolts with a socket and ratchet.

  • Re-check the engine make sure nothing is connecting the engine to the transmission. Raise the engine slightly. Work the engine forward slowly to separate the engine from the transmission. Use a clamp to secure the torque convertor to the transmission.

  • Remove the flywheel. Remove the harmonic balancer, timing chain, oil pump and piston/connecting rod assemblies. Place the engine on an engine stand.
