How to Pull Out Cooling Fan Relays

Your cooling fan is a fan that runs intermittently as your car engine runs. It powers up periodically to cool down the radiator and coolant system. The cooling fan is actually powered by the cooling fan relay, which is essentially a larger version of your vehicle's fuse. The location of your cooling fan relay may vary with makes and models of vehicles. However, they are typically located either near the radiator or inside the relay panel near your battery.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • Owner's manual
  • Remove the negative battery cable of your vehicle.

  • Find the location of your cooling fan relay. Consult your owner's manual if you have one. If you do not, you can call and ask an auto parts store. It will be able to tell you the location of the relay on your specific make and model vehicle. It will also be able to supply you with the replacement relay if and when you want to change it out.

  • Open the cover to the relay panel by depressing the two tabs on each end and lifting up. Flip the cover over and read the wiring diagram on the inside. This diagram will show you which relay the cooling fan relay is.

  • Grasp the relay firmly with your fingers and pull upward until it comes free.
