How to Locate a Fuel Pump

Maintaining the performance of your fuel and engine components is vital in ensuring your vehicle works in the correct manner. Many people struggle to find where certain components around the engine may be specifically located, making it difficult to carry out any maintenance work. One area which may need work is replacing a damaged or broken fuel pump. The process to locate the fuel pump is simple and can be carried out by anyone in a matter of minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Car jack
  • Jack stands
  • Wrench set
  • Raise your vehicle off the ground using a car jack. Place jack stands with the car jack to provide your vehicle with extra support.

  • Look underneath your vehicle to find the area where the fuel tank is housed. The fuel tank is a large drum which holds all the fuel in your vehicle. As it holds upwards of 15 to 20 gallons, it should be fairly easy to see.

  • The fuel pump makes up part of the fuel pump assembly and is connected to a retainer ring at the top of the fuel tank.

  • If you wish to remove the fuel pump you must first take all the fuel out of the tank with a siphon kit. Remove the retainer ring with a hammer and pull the assembly from the tank.

  • Remove the o-ring, strainer and fuel pump. To reattach a new fuel pump, follow the removal the process in step 4 in reverse.
