How to Locate the Overflow Bolt on a 2001 Chevy Malibu Transmission

The overflow hole on a 2001 Chevrolet Malibu transmission is designed to indicate when the transmission fluid level is full. The transmission on a 2001 Chevrolet Malibu does not contain a dipstick, and the fluid level must be checked by removing the overflow bolt from the overflow hole and adding fluid to the fill hole until it begins to spill out of the overflow hole. The overflow hole and overflow bolt are located on the passenger side of the transmission housing, next to the axle shaft hole.

Things You'll Need

  • Automotive jack
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Work light
  • Shift the Malibu's transmission into park and turn off the engine. Set the emergency brake.

  • Raise the front of the vehicle using an automotive jack and support it with jack stands. Chock the rear wheels.

  • Crawl underneath the vehicle and shine a work light on the right side of the transmission.

  • Look to the left of the passenger side axle-shaft hole. The overflow bolt is screwed into the overflow hole, approximately two inches to the left of the axle-shaft hole.
