How to Fix a Driver-side Mirror

The driver-side mirror on your vehicle is made up of a large plastic housing bolted to the side of the door using three studded posts that extend through the door and are secured by three nuts inside the inner door panel. To replace the mirror, you must take apart the inner door panel. It's most cost-effective to repair the mirror by replacing the lens that is inside the mirror housing. This process requires no tools.

  • Push the right side of the mirror lens into the mirror housing. This forces the left side of the mirror lens to protrude from the mirror housing.

  • Grab the mirror lens and pull outward on the lens until the lens breaks free of the mirror motor, which is mounted inside the housing. Lenses can be attached in two ways. One method employs four metal brackets that fit around the mirror motor. A second method utilizes a metal strip that is bolted to the back of the mirror lens. When you pull on the mirror lens, you will force the bracket to release the mirror motor.

  • Place the bracket of the new mirror lens against the mirror motor. If you have the four brackets, center the four brackets over the face of the motor. If you have the metal strip, place the tip of the strip into the slot on the face of the motor.

  • Push the mirror lens into the housing until it's flush with the outside edge of the housing.
