How to Tell If a Valve Adjustment Is Needed?

The intake valves in your automobile open and let air and fuel into the engine combustion chamber. The exhaust valves then open and let the gas vapor escape the combustion chamber. If the valves require adjustment, they could be opening and closing at the wrong time. This will cause your engine to experience several noticeable symptoms that could eventually result in fatal engine damage.

  • Start the engine and allow it to idle. Open the engine hood and listen to the engine. If you hear a constant ticking sound, the valves need adjustment.

  • Start the car and warm it up to normal operating temperature. Allow the engine to idle. If the engine idles below 800 RPM or stalls, your valves need adjustment.

  • Place the automobile into drive and press on the accelerator. If you notice the vehicle reacting slowly or sluggishly to the accelerator, your valves may require adjustment. However, this could also relate to a clogged fuel injector.
