How to Remove the Trans Am Turn Signal Switch

The Pontiac Trans Am uses a turn signal switch to give you control over the turn signal system. Located inside the steering column, the turn signal switch includes the switch itself and the turn signal stalk, which juts from the side of the steering column. If the turn signal switch fails, you'll no longer be able to communicate your intention to turn or change lanes to other drivers. This is not only illegal, but dangerous. Anyone with a modicum of mechanical repair experience can remove the Trans Am turn signal switch in a matter of minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Trim tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Pry the clamshell off the steering column using the trim tool. Depending on the year of your Trans Am, you may have to remove two screws using the Phillips screwdriver before the clamshell will come off the column.

  • Unplug the wiring connector from the Trans Am's turn signal switch by hand. Remove the retaining screw from the turn signal switch using the Phillips screwdriver.

  • Remove the switch from the steering column by hand.
