How to Remove Headliner Trim on a Chevy

The headliner in a Chevy vehicle is made of a stiff, board-like material with a very thin layer of foam, covered in a thin fabric that matches the color of the interior. The thin fabric can lose adhesion and begin sagging or hanging down, which becomes a safety hazard to the driver. To repair the headliner, the trim must be removed, including the molding, dome lights and sun visors. All of the trim parts can be removed in less than an hour with a set of screwdrivers.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Pry the cover off of the center dome light with a flat head screwdriver. Pry around the edges of the plastic surrounding the light to remove it as well. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove any visible screws from the plastic casing. The light bulb can be unscrewed or left hanging by the wire. It will fit through the hole in the headliner when it is pulled down.

  • Remove the Phillips head screws on the sides of each sun visor. Some visors have two screws on each side, depending on the size of the headliner.

  • Remove the Phillips head screws that hold the plastic molding along the edges of the headliner all the way around the vehicle. Pull off the plastic molding.

  • Pull the headliner down from the ceiling of the Chevy once all of the trim is removed. If the light bulb is left, make sure it doesn't snag on the headliner as you pull it down.
