How to Change a Headlight in a Buick

It is illegal to drive a car at night without two fully functional headlights. Changing a Buick's headlight or bulb is not a difficult procedure but should only be attempted with the manufacturer's manual at hand if you are not familiar with the process. Replacing a light bulb can be relatively inexpensive on a Buick, and with basic knowledge can be done on your own.

Things You'll Need

  • Owner's manual
  • Replacement headlight
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Lift the hood.

  • Remove the grill from the vehicle by releasing the four snap retainers keeping it in place with the flathead screwdriver. Holding the grill upright, grip each side of the grill and pull it forward; it will require some strength. Release the four lower snap retainers once the grill is forward enough.

  • Grab the retaining brackets at the rear of the headlights. Lift these brackets upward so the headlights can be moved forward through the gap left by the grill.

  • Pull the weather seal off the back of the headlight.

  • Disconnect the locking wire harness clip attached to the headlight socket. Turn the headlight ¼ inch counter-clockwise.

  • Pull the headlight from the assembly and retaining ring.

  • Install the new headlight unit into the retaining ring and reverse steps 1 to 4 to reassemble.

  • Click the bracket firmly into place before replacing the grill. Connect the wire harness to the new headlight, then check if they are working before completing the reassembly.
