The Mini Cooper is a compact car produced by BMW. The coolant tank requires a 50/50 mix of coolant and anti-freeze that are compatible with standard Kevlar-reinforced EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diane Monomer) hoses. Coolant optimizes the engine and keeps it from over heating. When the coolant is low it needs to be refilled or costly damage to the engine can occur. Refilling the coolant tank requires approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
Reach under the steering column on the driver side of the car and pull the hood-release lever. Walk to the front of the car and unlatch the hook to push the hood up all the way.
Locate the coolant tank in the rear passenger side of the engine cavity. The owner's manual also refers to this as the "Equalizing Tank." The tank is a clear tank with a black screw cap.
Check the coolant level in the tank by reading the fill line on the side of tank. The coolant should be between the MIN and MAX line. Ensure that the engine is cool when checking the level because heat causes coolant to expand and can result in a misreading. If the coolant levels are low, replace the coolant with a 50/50 mix of coolant and anti-freeze that are compatible with standard Kevlar-reinforced EPDM hoses.
Unscrew the cap on the coolant/equalizer tank and pour in the mixture of coolant and antifreeze until it reaches the MAX line. Use a funnel to avoid spilling the mixture into the engine or onto the ground.
Replace the tank cap and close the hood.
