How to Remove the Headlight Connector on a Protege

The electrical connector on the back of the headlight assembly of the Mazda Protege connects the headlight to the electrical system that you control through the headlight switch and dimmer switch. If you need to replace a bulb, change the headlight assembly or check the wiring, you need to remove this wiring connector, also called a wiring harness.

Things You'll Need

  • Crescent wrench or 10mm socket wrench
  • Turn off the Mazda Protege and prop open the hood. Make sure the engine is cool before beginning work.

  • Remove the two bolts on the sides of the coolant reservoir and push the coolant reservoir back away from the headlight assembly if you're working on the passenger-side headlight. Otherwise, skip this step.

  • Depress the two side tabs on the wiring connector to release them.

  • Pull the connector out of the back of the headlight assembly while depressing the side tabs.
