How to Replace the Steering Wheel in a 1996 Toyota Camry

There are a number of reasons that you might need to replace a steering wheel on a 1996 Toyota Camry. You could have this done by a mechanic, but even if you have only limited mechanical experience, you should be able to tackle the job yourself using a few special tools. One note of caution is that you need to be careful while working around the airbag module when replacing the steering wheel on a 1996 Toyota Camry.

Things You'll Need

  • Steering wheel puller
  • Torx T30 screwdriver
  • Small screwdriver
  • Socket set
  • Ratchet
  • Torque wrench
  • Move the steering wheel so that the wheels are straight.

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable from the terminal.

  • Loosen the cover on the sides of the steering wheel with a small screwdriver.

  • Remove the Torx screws holding the airbag module in place. Disconnect the airbag module electrical connection. Remove the airbag module from the wheel.

  • Disconnect the electrical connectors for the horn and cruise control.

  • Loosen and remove the steering wheel retaining nut. Attach the steering wheel puller to the shaft and remove the steering wheel. A steering wheel puller can be rented at most auto parts stores.

  • Turn the spiral cable counterclockwise until their is some resistance when turning the cable. Turn the cable clockwise approximately three turns and align the two red marks.

  • Install the new steering wheel onto the wheel shaft. Tighten the shaft nut to 26 ft.-lbs. of torque.

  • Reconnect the horn and cruise control connections.

  • Connect the airbag module electrical connection. Install the airbag module. Replace the Torx screws and tighten to 78 in.-lbs. of torque.

  • Reconnect the negative cable to the battery terminal.
