How to Program the Keyless Entry Remote for a Ford Focus

Since 2000, Ford has equipped its Focus line of cars with keyless entry devices. This feature allows the vehicle owner to use a remote control that fits on a keychain to lock and unlock the doors, open the trunk and activate a panic alarm in case of an emergency. When a remote is lost or broken, there is no need to visit the dealership for a new one. Replacement remotes can be purchased online at many retailers, and programming is easy to do on your own.

Programming 2000 to 2006 Models

  • Insert the key into the vehicle ignition. Turn the key from the "Off" position to the "Run" position, then repeat three more times. This must be done within six seconds.

  • Turn the ignition key back to the "Off" position and listen for the chiming sound from the vehicle. This will let you know that it has entered the programming mode. If no chime is heard, you will need to repeat the steps above.

  • Push any button on the remote control that needs to be programmed. This must be done within 20 seconds of the vehicle entering the programming mode. When the vehicle accepts the new remote control, it will chime again to confirm programming has been completed. If any other remotes need to be programmed, press any button on them within 20 seconds of programming the first one.

  • Turn the key to the "Run" position to exit the programming mode. Exit the vehicle and test all remotes to ensure they are working correctly.

Programming 2007 and Later Models

  • Enter the vehicle and shut all the doors. Insert the key into the ignition.

  • Move the key from the "Off" position to the "Run" position eight times in a row, ending in the "Run" position. This must be done within 10 seconds.

  • Listen for the vehicle to lock and unlock the doors. This signifies the vehicle is in the programming mode.

  • Push any button on the remote that you are programming. This needs to be done within 20 seconds of entering the programming mode. Listen again for the doors to lock and unlock to confirm that the remote was programmed successfully. If you have other remotes that need to be programmed, repeat this step with them within 20 seconds of programming the first remote.

  • Turn the ignition to the "Off" position and listen for the door locks again. This lets you know that the vehicle has exited the programming mode. Exit the vehicle and test the remotes.
