How to Repair a 1997 C230 Mercedes Benz Windshield Wiper

The 1997 C230 Mercedes Benz has a single, large wiper arm that cleans the whole windshield, as opposed to the double armed system. The large wiper arm rests in the center of the hood and has nearly 180 degrees of motion. This wiper arm is crucial to a driver's safety and needs to be working correctly at all times. If your wiper arm isn't wiping properly or has been knocked out of position, it can compromise your ability to see the road during a rainstorm or in other bad weather. Fortunately, repairing the single wiper is a straightforward job that can be done in less than half an hour.

Things You'll Need

  • Silicone based lubricant
  • Screwdriver
  • 2 pliers
  • Double-tube hardening epoxy

Repair catching arm motion

  • Set your wiper arm in the twelve o'clock position and turn your car off.

  • Open the hood and remove the top plastic cover of the wiper arm. Hold it firmly and pull the cover up and away from the arm.

  • Depress the two retaining tabs on the side of the main cover by pressing them with your fingers or a screwdriver. Pull the cover off when the tabs release.

  • Brush a silicone based lubricant on the drive shaft and sliders that move the wiper arm. Replace the main cover and top cover and close the hood.

Bent arm

  • Grip a bent arm below and above the bend with two crescent wrenches or pliers.

  • Push the arm back into its original position.

  • Verify that the fix worked by turning the wiper arm on and ensuring that it moves from its original to end position in one swift motion.

Broken arm

  • Mix equal portions of a double-tube hardening epoxy together. One tube contains the epoxy or resin and the other a hardening agent. When mixed they form a strong bond.

  • Generously brush the two mating surfaces on the broken arm with the mixed epoxy.

  • Hold the broken arm in place for the length of time required on the packaging so that the arm bonds correctly.
