How to Remove a Dome Light

Dome lights offer interior light in your car. They are turned on by switches, or triggered you open your door. The dome lights can be found on the interior roof of the car. Most interior dome lights have light switches that you can switch “on” and “off.” Prior to removing the dome light bulb, be sure the switch is in the “off” position.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat head screwdriver (optional)
  • Phililps screwdriver
  • Examine the dome light lens before removing it. Most dome lights are attached by four internal clips or by screws. This will vary depending on the year, make and model of your vehicle.

  • Grip the outer cover of the dome. Insert a small screwdriver into the edge between the lens and dome light cover. Determine the location of the tabs and gently pry the cover off. The tabs are usually located on two of the four sides of a dome cover. Be careful not to crack the cover.

If the dome light has screws, unscrew the screws and remove the dome cover.

  • Pull the bulb from the light socket. Dome light bulbs do not come equipped with the standard light socket, so the bulb must be pulled, rather than twisted, out of the socket.
