Cadillac equipped the 2000 model-year DeVilles with a lead-acid battery to store electricity for starting the vehicle and maintaining operating voltage for the computer and other electronic systems. Chronic undercharging, sulfation of the plates and sedimentation cause lead-acid batteries to lose capacity and voltage. Low electrolyte levels cause amperage and voltage loss, as well. Sealed battery units cannot be repaired. Replace the battery to restore full battery capacity.
Turn off all lights and electrical components in the vehicle.
Push the front edge of the rear seat cushion toward the rear of the car. Lift the front edge of the seat to disengage it from its supports.
Disconnect the seat heater connectors from the seat, if applicable. Pull up and out on the rear seat cushion and lift it out of the car.
Remove the battery's negative cable bolt with a wrench. Pull the battery's negative cable off of the battery. Remove the battery's positive cable bolt with a wrench. Pull the positive cable off of the battery. Position the cables so they do not touch the battery.
Pull the battery's vent tube up and off of the battery. Pull the tube out of the hole in the body.
Remove the battery's retainer bolt and retainer from the battery with a wrench. Lift the battery out of its recess.
Place the new battery in the battery recess. Install the retainer and retainer bolt. Torque the retainer bolt to 13 foot-pounds with a 3/8-inch torque wrench and socket.
Reinstall the battery vent tube onto the battery. Place the tail of the vent tube into the grommet hole in the body.
Install the battery positive cable and bolt and torque the bolt to 13 ft. lbs. with a 3/8-inch torque wrench. Install the battery negative cable and bolt and torque the bolt to 13 ft. lbs.
Position the rear seat cushion in the vehicle. Connect the seat heater wires. Lower the front of the seat and push it down firmly to engage the locator tabs. Push the rear of the seat down and to the rear firmly to latch the seat.
