2000 Accord V6 Alternator Removal

The alternator on your 2000 Accord V6 may seem almost impossible to remove without disassembling several engine components. However, you can actually service the alternator by removing a single key component. Following this strategy, you can easily remove, service and reinstall the alternator in your own driveway using a few common tools in a matter of minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Anti-theft radio code, if necessary
  • Wrench
  • Shop rag
  • Ratchet
  • Ratchet extension
  • Socket
  • Six-point box end wrench
  • Small wrench

Removing The Alternator

  • Make a note of the anti-theft code for your Accord radio, if necessary. You will need to enter the code on your radio after you finish replacing the alternator.

  • Open the hood and detach the ground (black) battery cable using a wrench. Wrap the cable terminal with a shop rag, if necessary, to make sure the cable will not accidentally contact the battery post as you replace the alternator.

  • Unplug the electrical connector from the condenser fan directly in front of the alternator.

  • Unscrew the three mounting bolts from the condenser fan shroud assembly using a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket. Then carefully lift the fan shroud assembly out of the engine compartment.

  • Remove the alternator belt. Relax the belt tension by rotating the tension pulley center bolt with a six-point box end wrench. Slide the belt off the alternator pulley.

  • Unplug the electrical connector from the rear of the alternator.

  • Remove the electrical wire from the back of the alternator using a small wrench.

  • Unscrew the two alternator mounting bolts using a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket. Make a note of each mounting bolt location because they are of different size. Remove the bolts.

  • Work the alternator out of the engine compartment.

Installing The Alternator

  • Work the alternator into position in the engine compartment. If necessary, rotate the alternator belt tension pulley using the six-point box end wrench to align the alternator mounting holes with the mounting holes on the engine.

  • Start the two alternator mounting bolts by hand, then tighten the mounting bolts using the ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.

  • Install the electrical wire on the back of the alternator using the small wrench.

  • Plug the electrical connector on the back of the alternator.

  • Install the alternator belt. Rotate the tension pulley center bolt with the six-point box end wrench, then slide the belt over the alternator pulley. Carefully release the tension pulley.

  • Set the condenser fan shroud assembly in position. Install the three mounting screws using the ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.

  • Plug the electrical connector on the condenser fan.

  • Attach the ground (black) battery cable using the wrench.

  • Enter the anti-theft code on your Accord radio, if necessary.
