How to Repair a Dent in a Motorcycle Gas Tank

If you ride a motorcycle, you will no doubt end up with a dent in the gas tank. In the past the only option was to have the tank removed, repaired and repainted. Or if you were lucky, a home dent repair kit worked but may or may not have damaged the paint. A better option, especially if you have a custom or restored paint job, is to opt for paintless dent removal. This is fairly standard now in most repair shops. However, with the same tools, this can be done at home on most metal gas tanks.

Things You'll Need

  • Ultra Dent 24 inch double bend soft tip tool
  • Teflon plastic tip knock down tool
  • Ball peen hammer
  • Owl’s Eye
  • Attach the "Owl’s Eye," which is a stick with pinstripes on it, to the gas tank. Adjust it so that the pinstripe lines reflect on the dent. You can find the "Owl's Eye," as well as the other tools necessary for this repair, at your local auto or motorcycle body supply shop.

  • Use the Teflon plastic tip to take the high sides off the dent if there is severe pressure (indicated by distortion of the pinstripe reflection). Gently tap the tip against the areas of the dent where the pinstripe has become thin or distorted. Keep the Teflon plastic tip tool steady and level while working.

  • Insert the Ultra Dent tool into the gas tank and gently press and massage it against the outer edges of the dent. Do not go straight for the center of the dent; you need to work from the outer edges in.

  • Repeat Steps 2 and 3, as needed, until the dent is gone. This is indicated by straight stripes in the Owl's Eye pinstripe reflection on the paint of the gas tank.

  • Clean and polish the tank following the paint manufacturer's directions if desired.
