How to Repair a Sticky Ignition Switch in a Truck

The ignition switch in your truck should give you years of trouble-free performance. However, over time, it's not uncommon for the switch to stick. The pins in the tumbler of the ignition switch sometimes jam or seize up. Rather than replace the ignition switch, you can try to repair the sticky ignition switch in your truck. Repairing the switch should take only a few minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • WD-40 lubricant
  • Clean rag
  • Spray a liberal amount of WD-40 into the keyhole of the ignition switch.

  • Push the key in and pull it out several times to work the pins in the tumbler so that the lubricant gets spread around inside the switch assembly.

  • Turn the ignition key. If it is still sticking, repeat Steps 1 and 2 until it no longer sticks.

  • Wipe up any excess lubricant with a clean rag. Also, make sure you clean your ignition key as it will probably be thoroughly coated with lubricant.
