How to Change a Hyundai Accent Wiper Motor

The Hyundai Accent uses a simple wiper motor mounted on the firewall to power the windshield wipers. If you've owned your Accent for a number of years, it is not uncommon that the motor may have failed. Replacement motors can be purchased from most auto parts stores, but you'll need the model year of your car to get the correct motor.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Socket set
  • Pliers
  • Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable. Loosen the nut of the cable clamp with a socket wrench and pull the clamp off of the battery terminal.

  • Pull the electrical connector off the wiper motor.

  • Remove the four bolts that hold the wiper motor to the firewall.

  • Pull the motor off the firewall as far as it will go. It will still be attached to the pivot arm on the wiper assembly.

  • Grab the fastening nipple on the back of the motor with a pair of pliers and pull back on the nipple. Wedge the pliers between the pivot arm and the motor and gently pry the motor away from the pivot arm.

  • Install the new wiper motor. The wiper motor slides onto the end of the pivot arm. During the removal process, this connection sometimes needs to be pulled off forcefully, but the motor and pivot-arm connection should slide together with little or no force upon installation. The rest of the installation is the reverse of removal.
