How to Do an Oil Change on a 2006 KIA Rio

The cost of a professional oil change is minor compared to the cost of many other scheduled maintenance requirements. Nevertheless, you can save $10 to $20 (labor cost) every few months by changing the oil in your Kia Rio yourself. This tutorial applies to the 2006 Kia Rio and all Kia Rios with the 1.6L or 1.4L engines.

Things You'll Need

  • Ramps or jack and jack stands
  • Socket wrench set
  • Oil drain pan
  • 80 mm 15-flute oil filter wrench
  • Kia Rio oil filter
  • Funnel
  • 3 1/2 qt. of 10W-30 engine oil
  • Drive your Rio onto the ramps or lift and support it using a jack and jack stands. Let the engine cool down for at least 30 minutes prior to beginning.

  • Remove the engine brush guard cover from underneath the engine bay. The guard is attached by simple bolts. Once it is removed, you will be able to access the engine components.

  • Place the drain pan directly underneath the oil drain plug. Remove the drain plug and let the oil drain completely. This should take 15 to 20 minutes.

  • Use your socket wrench with the special oil filter wrench (80 mm 15-flute) to twist off the oil filter. Set the old filter in the drain pan.

  • Apply a small amount of fresh engine oil on the mounting rim of the new oil filter. Hand-tighten the filter. Do not use the wrench to install it or you risk over-tightening it. Replace the oil drain plug.

  • Lower the vehicle or coast it off of the ramps (do not crank the engine).

  • Open the oil reservoir cap from on top of the engine and use the funnel to add 3 1/2 qt. of engine oil.
