The air bags in a Ford will need to be removed if you want to remove the steering wheel. The air bag assembly is just behind the center steering wheel cover. To remove the air bag, you'll need a few simple tools and about 15 minutes.
Remove the screws holding the center steering wheel cover in place. These screws are normally on either side of the steering wheel.
Pry the steering wheel cover off.
Pull the lower steering wheel column cover down to remove it.
Unplug the wiring harness running to the air bag assembly in the center of the steering wheel.
Remove the bolts holding the air bag mounting brackets to the steering wheel and pull the air bag off the steering wheel.
