Years of use and problems on the brake system will cause the rotors to wear out, crack or get scored. In this situation, you should replace the rotors on your Dodge 3500 as soon as possible to prevent a serious accident. If you are servicing the rear rotors on your 3500 model, this guide will help you remove and install the resurfaced or new units.
Loosen the rear wheel lugs using a lug wrench but do not remove them.
Raise the rear tires off the ground using a floor jack and support your Dodge on two jack stands. Then chock the front wheels.
Remove the lugs, wheels and tire assemblies.
Unscrew the hub extension nuts from the hub and wheel bearing assemblies, if your Dodge 3500 model is equipped with extensions. Use a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.
Clean the hub and wheel bearing assemblies using brake parts cleaner and a shop rag to remove as much brake lining dust as possible. This will keep you from breathing lining dust as much as possible as you work around the wheel assemblies. Some brake pads contain asbestos, which is known to cause cancer.
Dismount the brake caliper and bracket assembly from the brake rotors using a ratchet and torx bit or socket.
Secure the brake caliper and bracket assembly to the suspension using a piece of wire or bungee cord. This will prevent damage to the brake hose connected to the brake calipers.
Inspect the brake rotors and look for mounting screws. If your particular model is equipped with them, remove the screws or bolts using a Phillips screwdriver or ratchet and socket.
Remove the rotor assembly from the hub and wheel bearing assembly.
Set the rotors on the hub and wheel bearing assembly.
Install the mounting screws or bolts if your particular model is equipped with them. Use the Phillips screwdriver or ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.
Detach the brake caliper and bracket assembly from the suspension.
Mount the brake caliper and bracket assembly on the brake rotors using the ratchet and torx bit or socket.
Install the hub extension on the hub and wheel bearing assemblies, if your Dodge 3500 model is equipped with them. Use the ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.
Mount the wheels and tire assemblies on the wheel hubs and install the wheel lugs.
Lower the vehicle and remove the chocks from the front tires.
Finish tightening the wheel lugs using the lug wrench.
Depress the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads and caliper piston on the brake rotors.
