How to Remove a Front Sway Bar

Front sway bars help to control body roll and sway experienced in cornering and when driving in windy conditions. These bars are mounted in rubber cushioned brackets attached to the vehicle frame. Removal of a sway bar without immediate replacement is not recommended.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrenches
  • Sockets and ratchet
  • Jack the front of the vehicle up and support the vehicle on jack stands.

  • Remove the bolts attaching the sway bar end links to the bar and lower control arms. Normally this will require a pair of wrenches--one to hold the bolt and another to loosen the nut.

  • Use a socket wrench and remove the bolts attaching the brackets to the frame. Remove the brackets and rubber cushions from the sway bar. The sway bar can now be removed from the car.
