How to Replace a Tail Light on a Chrysler PT Cruiser

When a taillight in your Chrysler PT Cruiser is out, you decrease the visibility of the vehicle significantly during nighttime driving. To allow other drivers behind you to see your PT Cruiser more effectively at night, you should check all your lights periodically and replace them as needed. You can replace your own taillight and other lights in your PT Cruiser and save money on labor costs that local repair stations or dealers would charge you.

Things You'll Need

  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Replacement taillight
  • Make sure the PT Cruiser is off and the keys are not in the ignition.

  • Approach the taillight assembly with the blown taillight.

  • Locate the single screw at the bottom of the taillight assembly and remove it with the flathead screwdriver.

  • Gently pull the taillight assembly away from the rear fender. There are wire harness attached to the rear light sockets that will only allow you to move the assembly 7 or 8 inches back from the fender.

  • Locate the taillight socket and turn it slightly counterclockwise until it unlocks from the back of the assembly. Remove the old taillight from the socket and insert the new taillight. Place the socket into the assembly. It will only fit in one direction. Turn the socket clockwise until it locks into place.

  • Place the assembly back into the taillight cavity, but before replacing the screw, test the taillight by turning on the lights and checking it. Turn the lights back off.

  • Replace and tighten the screw to the taillight assembly.
