How to Replace the Ignition Coil in a Dodge Ram

The Dodge Ram ignition coil works as the heart of the ignition system. It converts power from the battery to boost the voltage. This increased voltage fires the spark plugs and allows proper combustion to run the engine. The 3.9L, 5.2L and 5.9L engines use a distributor ignition system that relies on the ignition coil.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench or socket set
  • Replacement ignition coil
  • Torque wrench
  • Open the hood and locate the distributor on the Dodge Ram. On 3.9L, 5.2L and 5.9L engines, the distributor mounts to the right engine cylinder head. The 5.9L diesel engine has the ignition coil mounted to the bracket connected to the air injection pump (AIR pump) mounting bracket.

  • Make sure you have the correct replacement part. Gas engines use an ignition coil filled with epoxy rather than one filled with oil.

  • Release the primary wiring from the ignition coil. You may need to press a release to unlock the wires. Also, disconnect from the ignition coil any secondary wires, sometimes referred to as spark plug cables.

  • Leave the mounting bolts that connect the mounting bracket to the cylinder in place. The accessory drive belt puts tension on the mounting bracket. If you need to remove the mounting bracket, release the tension first.

  • Unfasten the ignition coil from the mounting bracket. Usually there are two bolts securing it in place. Use a wrench or a socket set to remove the bolts.

  • Replace the old Dodge Ram ignition coil with a universal or stock replacement one. Reassemble the parts by reversing the Steps. Tighten the bracket-to-mounting bolts to 100 inch pounds (11 Nm) with a torque wrench.
